How To Look Your Best in Pictures

Choosing what to wear for pictures of any kind can be stressful for multiple reasons…and with good cause! You’re spending money on a professional photographer, the pictures are capturing a special moment in time (engagement, birthday, family celebrations), and you want to make sure that you look your best for something that will potentially hang on your wall for years. No pressure, right?

Well, not to worry! I’ve styled many clients for photoshoots and I’m going to share with you a few tips to help you feel and look amazing in your own pictures!

WHERE WILL THE PHOTOS BE?

You should stand out against the chosen setting whether it’s a park or your living room. This means not wearing light colors against a background that’s white, or wearing shades of red if you’re in front of a brick wall.

WHAT ABOUT COLOR AND PATTERNS?

Blush, emerald, and plum (or any royal color) tends to look great on most skin tones. Stay away from neon or wearing too much animal print by the face since they tend to cast a yellow glow or look too busy. Here’s a trick I use all the time for families: pick a plaid pattern that you love (you don’t need to wear it) and pull a few of the colors within to use. The colors are meant to be together since they’re already in the pattern, so you don’t need to worry about looking mismatched. Picking more than one color will add more interest and depth to photos versus everyone wearing the same shades (i.e. everybody in blue jeans and white shirts).

When incorporating pattern, keep in mind that patterns in a medium-size are best for photos. Prints that are too small (such as tiny polka dots) can appear blurry while prints that are too large (bold florals) can be overwhelming in an image.

WHERE SHOULD I SHOP?

I love places that offer a mix of basics and on-trend pieces. Target, Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx, and Kohls are some of my favorites!
